The proposed (done deal?) selling of New Brunswick Power to Quebec Hydro continues to make the news.
I should be against it on a point of principle, but.......
Quebec has the cheapest power around and we are guaranteed a freeze on charges for five years and then increases will be in line with inflation.
Sticking with NB, prices have already been guaranteed to rise 3% every year for five years and increases thereafter will also be inflation levels or more.
I have calculated that in the first five years we (my family) will have saved around $1500. At that point our bills are then running $500 a year minimum lower than they would have been with NBPower and future increases will not be more than they would have been with NBPower.
So after 6 years we are $2000 better off than we would have been with that figure rising by $500 annually.
How could I be against the proposal? And yet......
It reminds me of the Building Societies in the UK when they became banks. Savers and borrowers qualified for significant 'windfalls' if the change went ahead. It was hard to be against such a move because of those windfalls.
I should be against this sell off. But I'm not. And, to be honest, I think Quebec Hydro would run things better anyway.
I've yet to see a convincing argument for NB retaining power of NB Power.

Where did you get your information? You should consider your sources as you have clearly been lead astray. Please tell me a credible source as to what the rate increases are going to be? Also, you clearly haven't read the MOU or you would know that cpi isn't the only thing that increases are tied to. In fact, transmission charges are not limited to cpi. Right now we see these included in our current rate structure. This is not the case with HQ.
ReplyDeleteYou also appear to have bought the government misinformation about NB Power not being run well. Interesting! Very interesting.
Please do your homework.
(Yes, I am choosing anonymous because I know what publically speaking out against the "regime" can do to a person.)
Actually Anonymous, you are being just as Anonymous as the keeper of this blog. Now, that I find as equally as interesting as the questions that you have posed.
ReplyDeleteBTW, I agree with the questions you have posted and your comments. There is no credible source which says what the rates will be - only government propoganda.
Sources of power rate increase information? NB Power itself has said that rates will increase by 3% per year.
ReplyDeleteIt's been accepted (even by those opposing) that increases with Quebec Hydro running it will be inflation linked...as they would be with NB Power continuing to run things.
Any costs resulting from QH running it will also have to paid for with NB running it.
As for NB not running things so well, I think that's a universal belief.
Seems that some of those who have said that before are now changing their minds because they are against the sell off.
Feel free to come back with convincing information. As I say, I should be against it but I've yet to see anything that might convince me more than $2000 plus in savings would.
